Harrington, ME --- 2nd Week July 2009

Wow.  Pretty spot.  The left hand picture is the view from our campsite.

The highlight of this stay was lobster --- 2-1/2 pounds of steamed, soft-shell lobster delivered to our door for $15.  Yum.

Skowhegan, ME --- 2nd Week July 2009

We finally left the coast and are headed to Quebec, Canada.  Skowhegan is about half way.  There is supposed to be a rail trail here as well as places to fish and kayak.  Below you can see us in the middle of a high intensity workout on Wesserunsett Lake.  With any luck, I'll have a fishing report for you as well.

I poked around in the woods and discovered Round Pond --- a 40 acre puddle reputed to have Brook Trout in it.  I caught a few --- about the size of my thumb.  The real adventure was just getting there.  The Maine woods are every bit as thick as those in western Washington.  Knowledgeable locals drag a beater canoe through the trees, go fish, then leave the canoe behind.  Being neither knowledgeable, nor local, I was stuck looking for a road.  I discovered a sorry excuse for a "road".  Fortunately, our Jeep was the right tool for the job.

We came up north to stay cool and have largely been successful...  Ritzy gets warm soaking up the sun.  However, we've neither mad dogs nor Englishman.

The road to Quebec is the main road thru Maine.  It's actually rather puny.  Puny, but pretty.  See for yourself.

Quebec, Canada --- 3rd week July 2009

The only walled city in North America.  Since we are staying across the water in Levis, we came over on the boat.

Levis has a REALLY nice bike trail --- smooth, level asphalt with water front views.  Pretty keen, eh?  Brian and Deb give it two thumbs up.

Here's a few shots of Levis...

Montreal, Canada --- 4th week of July 2009

Big town --- Los Angeles crammed onto an island.  There is a lot to do.  Excellent bike trails.  Water everywhere.

Traffic is really rough.  Quebec drivers have some really annoying habits.  It's good thing they outlawed guns here.  Otherwise, it would be just like LA.

Burlington, VT --- 4th week July 2009

The report we got before we took off was "Every little town in Vermont is cute".  So far, we have to agree with that.  Here's Burlington:

Montpelier (The State Capitol ---home to a whopping 8000 souls):

And North Hero on Grand Isle:

     S

So far we have gone golfing, biking, and sight seeing.  Hiking trails are few and far away.  And, although there is plenty of water and many public boat launches or beaches nearby, we might get the kayaks wet.

Vermont appears to be where New Englanders go when they want to get away from it all.  I stopped in the middle of our bike ride and took a few pics.  While I was standing there, three middle age Hippies pull up beside me in a beat up Chevy Vega:  "Hey Man.  It's a nice island.  Enjoy it.  But PLEASE don't come here and develop it".

Today was boat mod day.  I added a bracket to hold a fly rod and a couple of clamps to hold the oars.  Now it needs a test drive.

This has turned out to be our second longest stay of the journey --- 11 days.  The campground is actually located in South Hero, about 10 miles north of Burlington.  This is a real nice spot.  I got in two rounds at the a golf course on site.  There is a boat launch on Lake Champlain right across the street, and a hiking/biking rail trail just around the bay.  Hey, we're here to goof off.  So, we got the boats wet again and stomped around on the trail too...
